When you start reading a novel, do you prefer to be plunged right into the action, or do you prefer a slower, more descriptive introduction to the plot and characters?

My Answer:
I prefer there to be some kind of "hook" in the first chapter that will instantly intrigue me to continue reading the rest of the novel.

A hook is important I think. The joy of reading is that these are different for everyone though.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree that a hook is what really catches you but a "hook" can be different for everyone, I think. For myself, hooks are those lengthy descriptions at the start of the book.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Edel. Every first chapter needs a "hook" of some sort, but it can be different for every reader.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you, I need a Hook to get me into the book, then It could slow down.
ReplyDeleteA hook up front is good, but for me, that doesn't necessarily being plunged into action right from the start. I like both. It really depends on the book and what I'm in the mood for.
